Fireclay vs cast iron sinks: an honest comparison

From three metres away, a white cast iron sink and a white fireclay sink are twins. Up close, they are entirely different constructions, and that difference decides how they age.

Cast iron is a metal shell coated with a layer of porcelain enamel, fused at around 800°C. The enamel is hard but brittle and sits on top of the iron. When it chips, and a dropped cast pan will chip it, the exposed iron rusts, and the repair is a colour-matched epoxy that never quite matches.

Fireclay is ceramic through and through. The clay body and the glaze are fired together past 1,250°C, so the glaze is chemically bonded into the body rather than layered onto it. Surface wear on fireclay reveals more ceramic, not metal, which is why decades-old butler sinks still look honest.

On weight, cast iron is heavier, a 33-inch cast iron farmhouse sink can pass 90 kg, versus roughly 50–60 kg for fireclay. Both need proper support framing, but cast iron pushes some base cabinets past their rating.

On cleaning, the two behave similarly day to day, warm water and a soft cloth. But enamel dulls under abrasive cleaners faster than fireclay glaze, and neat bleach etches enamel visibly sooner.

On cost, quality fireclay and quality cast iron land in a similar bracket. The difference is the failure mode: fireclay's weakness is rim impact during installation, which careful handling avoids; cast iron's weakness is enamel chipping across its whole life, which no amount of care fully prevents. That asymmetry is why we build in fireclay.
