Fireclay sink FAQs

Straight answers on durability, sizing, installation, care, and ordering, from the team that fires the sinks.

Material & Durability

What is a fireclay sink made of?

Fireclay is a refractory ceramic blend of kaolin, ball clay, German chamotte, feldspar, and silica. The slip is cast in plaster moulds, dried, glazed by hand, and fired past 1,250°C for over 20 hours, so the glaze is chemically bonded into the body, never coated on top.

Are fireclay sinks durable? Do they chip or crack?

Fireclay is one of the most durable sink materials made, it resists scratches, acids, thermal shock, and daily impact from cookware. Its only real weakness is a hard knock to the rim during installation, which is why every Burly sink ships with a fitted impact frame and careful handling instructions.

What is the difference between fireclay and porcelain sinks?

Porcelain (vitreous china) is fired at lower temperatures and is thinner and more brittle, fine for bathroom basins, risky in a working kitchen. Fireclay is a denser, thicker refractory body fired hotter, giving far higher resistance to impact, staining, and thermal shock.

Do fireclay sinks stain or scratch?

The vitreous glaze is non-porous, so coffee, wine, turmeric, and citric acid rinse away without staining. Metal pans can leave grey surface marks, but these sit on top of the glaze and lift off with a non-abrasive cream cleaner.

Sizing & Installation

What size cabinet do I need for a farmhouse sink?

Allow a base cabinet 3 inches wider than the sink: a 30-inch sink needs a 33-inch base, a 33-inch sink needs a 36-inch base, and a 36-inch sink needs a 39-inch base. There is no exception, the apron cut-out and support cleats need the clearance.

How much does a fireclay sink weigh? Does it need extra support?

A typical 30 to 36-inch fireclay farmhouse sink weighs 45–60 kg empty and can exceed 100 kg in use. It must sit on a levelled support frame (2×4 cleats on both cabinet walls carrying the full base), never on the countertop or silicone alone.

Can a fireclay sink be installed undermount or topmount?

Yes. Burly makes apron-front, undermount, and topmount fireclay sinks. Many of our apron-front models are reversible, one face fluted, one flat, so the installer chooses the exposed side on site.

Are fireclay sinks compatible with garbage disposals?

Yes, with a standard 3.5-inch drain a fireclay sink accepts most waste-disposal units. Because the ceramic body doesn't flex like stainless, heavy disposals should be fitted with an independent support strap rather than hanging entirely from the drain flange.

Care & Cleaning

How do I clean a fireclay sink without damaging the glaze?

Daily, rinse with warm water and a soft cloth. Weekly, use a non-abrasive cream cleaner or any pH-neutral ceramic cleaner with a sponge, rinse, and dry with a tea towel to prevent watermarks. Avoid steel wool and abrasive scouring pads.

Can I use bleach on a fireclay farmhouse sink?

Fireclay is acid- and chemical-resistant, but prolonged exposure to neat bleach can dull the glaze over time. If you need bleach for sanitising, dilute it 1:10, rinse thoroughly, and never leave it standing in the bowl.

Ordering & Trade

Do you offer wholesale or trade pricing for distributors and dealers?

Yes. Burly supplies distributors, kitchen and bath dealers, hospitality projects, architects, and OEM partners. Request a wholesale catalogue and trade pricing through our contact page and we'll respond within one business day.

What is the lead time for a fireclay sink order?

Each sink takes roughly seven days to move through casting, drying, glazing, and the final fire. In-stock SKUs ship promptly; container-volume and custom-spec orders are quoted with a production schedule at the time of enquiry.

Which countries does Burly export to?

We ship worldwide, with active distribution across North America, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Middle East. Our sinks carry the certifications required for major plumbing codes, including cUPC (B45) and ISO 9001.

What warranty comes with a Burly fireclay sink?

Every Burly sink carries a 10-year limited warranty covering manufacturing defects in the body and glaze under normal residential use. Every critical dimension is measured before the sink leaves our line in Bareja, Gujarat.
